The Wonders of Social Media

Hi Everyone,

I'm sure most of you are on one or more of the social media sites, its kind of hard not to be these days.   Social media has pretty much taken over.  I enjoy social media and use different sites for different purposes.

Let's start with the beginning, Facebook.....Facebook is a great tool keep in touch with family and friends near and far.  Its also a good tool to use in terms of showcasing any interests that you may have, along with creating new friendships via the many, many groups that are on there.  I have gotten to know many talented photographers on Facebook through groups that I've elected to join.  You have the option of creating your very own personal page or creating a Business Fan Page.  There is also the capability of linking the two pages or linking the two but having two very different audiences depending on what settings you create with respect to who you allow access to.  The really cool part about Facebook is that you can also personally chat with your friends and groups as well via Instant Messenger (IM).  That makes it very easy to reach out when you may have questions, need an opinion, need further information on a particular subject matter, or to just....chat.

Next, there is Twitter....which is a bit different but a quick, fun site.  Basically, everyone posts what I call quick snippets of their thoughts, quote, pictures, etc with a limit of 140 characters.  Twitter is much different from Facebook because you can't write books for a status, lol.  Twitter is my personal favorite for that very reason....its quick and easy but also allows for a lot of networking.  You can still have a ton of followers and follow anyone you want, I don't believe there is a limit like on Facebook where there is a limit of 5000 followers per profile.  Twitter is very popular and I have found that just about EVERYONE is on there.....tv personalities, music icons, athletes as well everyday people like you and me.  Everyone tweets!!

On to Instagram....which primarily showcases pictures and videos.  You can't really chat on there but it is a great visual site for sharing photos and videos.  You can also create a following on Instagram. One thing I have noticed about Instagram that you should be aware of is that there are a lot of spammers and soft porn profiles on there.  On occasion, I will get one that will like one of my photos or follow me but I'm careful about not following back so that I don't have them in my feed.  As with all social media, if you have children that are on any of these sites, PLEASE monitor them and what they are viewing, who they are following and who follows them.

Pinterest is another one of my personal favorites!  At first, I couldn't see what all the hype was about "pinning".....well, I found out and its quite addictive.  I'm on it all the time, lol.  I love it because I can pin anything I find interesting from a photo to an article and it gets put into the boards I've created on my profile.  Everyone can see your profile and follow.  For example, I have a Landscapes, Wildlife and Black & White Board and each board has pins that correspond to that board.  Its pretty neat because the Landscapes has various photos of beautiful landscapes that intrigued me as well as few that I photographed.  Pinterest is another great tool for others to see your work.  What I do is pin my photos to a board and then create a link to my website so that once you click on my picture if you want to see more of what I do, you can click the visit button and it will automatically bring you to my website.  Pinterest is extremely user friendly and I highly recommend it.  Like I said, its very addicting and you will find yourself on there for hours pinning because you can find just about anything on there.  I probably spend most of my time on my phone browsing Pinterest. You can create searches, or follow other profiles and check out what they have pinned and pin their items to your board.  You are also able to forward pins and attach a message.  Its a really fun site and I find it very relaxing and inspiring.  The photo above is one of my photos that I pinned to my Landscape Board.

There are other sites as well such as Flickr and Tumblr but I highlighted just a few of my personal favs.  Check out some of them, if you haven't already and be sure and send an IM or Tweet at me and say hello, I'd love to hear from you!

Til next time,

K
