What Makes A Great Picture?

Hi Everyone, I have a question....what makes a great picture?  What does that mean to you?  Many photographers show their work via various photography groups and social media, including myself.  We all hope that we'll get many likes, positive feedback and anything else that may stroke our egos about our work. Any person that says otherwise is not being truthful.  Who wouldn't want everyone to love their work?  The reality is we may get a few likes on some photos, some not at all, and others hailed as Photo of the Year.  Up and coming photographers are often discouraged when they are not overnight successes.  As with anything, success requires much effort, time and patience.  Don't be discouraged, continued shooting.  Shoot everyday, often, and only what intrigues you and how you want to shoot it. So what if your picture doesn't look like the next photographer's work....is it supposed to?  I certainly hope not.  Your pictures are yours.  They are your vision and so

The West Cornwall Bridge

Image
Hi Everyone! Some of you may have seen my picture of the West Cornwall Bridge in Cornwall, CT recently.  This is a very beautiful covered bridge made of wooden lattice-truss that spans the Housatonic River. The bridge supports one lane of traffic for the Sharon-Goshen Turnpike and is estimated to have been build around 1864.  In 1975, the bridge was listed with the National Register of Historic Places. Driving on the bridge, there isn't the creaky sound that you would hear driving over wood.  I'm quite certain that is due to the bridge being reinforced with a concealed steel deck in 1973. This is a very beautiful covered bridge and if you haven't seen it yet I would definitely recommend putting it in your bucket list of things to do.  There is a cozy little restaurant just after you cross it to your right that is within walking distance to the bridge.  There are also benches along the river to sit and take in the view, as seen in the picture above, as well as

The Change of Seasons: Saying Goodbye.....and Hello

Image
Hi Everyone, I woke up the other morning and got a good realization that summer is really gone.  Lately as I've been out and notice the leaves beginning to change, I remember how beautiful the fall really is.  I'm not fond of the cold by any means but I can't hide the fact that I do enjoy the beauty of the seasons changing.  As a kid, summer was always my favorite because I loved the heat, the sun and all the things I could get into.  Summer symbolized school vacation and what seemed like many lazy days ahead.  It meant getting up early, riding my bike all day, hanging out with friends and only stopping at home to eat.  As a small child, time was never ending.....not flying by as it does when you get older, lol.  Even though I didn't care for colder weather, I often enjoyed little perks such as drinking hot chocolate with marshmellows and hot cider with cinnamon sticks.  I may not have been outside as much as other children in the neighborhood during the cooler mont

The Roosevelt Mill

Image
Hi Everyone,  I found another old factory in Rockville.   Its an old sweater mill that was started in 1941 by three partners who pooled $500 together, purchased machinery and opened a knitting mill in Manchester under the name of Manchester Knitting Mills.  In 1951, the company moved to Rockville to expand and settled in the first floor of what was then known as the Minterburn Mill that was vacant due to the demise of the woolen industry.   In 1968, the company purchased the building, became the Roosevelt Mill, and went on to produce 12,000 sweaters per week at peak production.  Sales were made to major retailers such as JC Penney and Montgomery Ward.  The company remained fully operational until 1986, when it was sold to a new owner who did not share the same passion for operating a manufacturing company.  Ultimately the mill closed its doors in 1988 and remains vacant to this day. As I was photographing this building, a driver stopped and asked me why I would want t

Southford Falls

Hi Everyone, I can't believe its the end of summer and the kids are back in school!  Time flies when you're having fun :)  Its been a very busy last couple of weeks for myself.  My son just started high school and I've been trying to get a lot in for the end of the summer.  Last weekend I was at Southford Falls in Southbury, CT. I must tell you that I didn't photograph any of the falls because unfortunately its been pretty dry so there wasn't much flowing water.  But, to my great surprise, as I was walking the trails I came across a covered bridge!  As most know about me, I LOVE covered bridges....so I was like a little kid when I saw it.  Take a look.... I had no idea the bridge was there until I saw it from an opening in the path.  There is also a trail that leads to it so..... Inside the bridge I went, lol.  There were a few people that were there because you can fish for trout from the bridge as well.  A few kids were running back and forth

Beavertail Lighthouse & Park - Jamestown, Rhode Island

Image
Hi Everyone, Its been a little while, my apologies....its been a great summer! One of my favorite places to visit is Beavertail Lighthouse and Park in Jamestown, Rhode Island.  I went a couple of times this summer and each time I go is like being there for the first time. The lighthouse was built in 1856 and separates the East and West Passages of the Narragansett Bay.  There is a lighthouse museum and you can go up into the top of the lighthouse.  The park itself is beautiful with grassy, wooded and rocky areas to explore.  There are also walking and biking trails. Beavertail is known to also host many weddings and provides beautiful scenery for wedding photos.  Although I don't typically do wedding photographs, I couldn't resist capturing this beautiful little girl.  She was so active and simply adorable in her dress.....she was in pictures with the rest of the bridal party but then kind of strolled off and played by herself. Girls Softball

Hi Everyone! I hope everyone is enjoying all the great weather we've been having! I'm truly enjoying it and there just doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day for me to be everywhere, lol. Earlier this month, I went to a few of my niece's softball practices and then a game. That's my niece to the left.  I made the mistake of calling her name while she was watching the game....yikes!, lol. It is amazing to watch these girls put in their best efforts at such a young age.  Three words for these girls:  vibrant, determined and competitive.  You can see it in their faces and how they played.  I was fortunate to be able to capture some of what I saw: My niece again....she plays just about every sport. As you can see, this is serious business.  These girls were amazing to watch!  Remember to support the local youths in your town. :-) Til next time, K

Memorial Weekend

Image
Hi Everyone, I hope you all had a fantastic Memorial Weekend!  My weekend was very good, with the exception of brief periods of rain. Let me share with you two spots I visited.  The first place is a revisit....the Wethersfield Cove.  A few months back I was there and it was cold and snow was still on the ground.  I was on the highway and I could see thru the trees a bit to see that people were down there so guess what?  Off the highway I went on one of my "adventures". It was probably about two hours til sunset so many were arriving to go fishing.  Some were at the boat launch ready to get out on the water and others had their gear and were standing or sitting and fishing for a bit by themselves. These two were true fisherman.  They had all their gear and judging by everything they had I'm almost certain it was a good evening for them.  There's nothing better than catching up with your best pal while doing something you both enjoy. Unfortunately, I missed

Lighthouse Point

Image
Hi All! I was out at Lighthouse Point and it was beautiful! This is the first shot I took as I was approaching the lighthouse.  The lighthouse first opened in 1847. A carousel built in 1916 is located behind the lighthouse .  It runs and can be rented for private parties.   It would be a great spot for a child's birthday party.  There is also a huge playscape for kids to play on. There is also a pavilion nearby to hold private functions.  On this day, the pavilion was being set up for a wedding. Its too bad that no one is able to go up into the lighthouse because I would have loved to have gotten a shot from the top! A few people had arrived early and were strolling about enjoying the scenery.  I took these two photos from out on the rocks that extended into the water.   As you can see its the perfect spot for couples to spend quality time and take pictures. These two appeared to be on a shoot.  The photographer was taking many pictures of her around the l

Welcome to New Haven

Image
Hi Everyone! This weekend has certainly been interesting with the weather acting like its uncertain what season it was wants to be in.  However, it was gracious to me while I had some fun down in New Haven. What I really like about New Haven is that its always very busy, you see many different people and activities happening.  I like to think of it as a slight preview before you get to New York... Many people are waiting for the bus....some are talking on their cell phones, listening to music or just standing around taking in the scene. My son elected to get himself in the next shot....somehow he figured I wouldn't see him.  He underestimates me, lol. Here he is again as we head to Buffalo Wings for lunch.....and what a good lunch it was! Back out on the street again.....ALOT of traffic.  You see a little bit of everything on the main streets.  Its been awhile since I've seen anyone riding with a boom box.  I really got that "Big City"
